Computer Doc’s Top Ten Recommendations For all Computers running Windows:

  1. Purchase a good surge protector or UPS system and plug your computer’s power cords into the surge protector.  If you have a modem, get one that will protect the modem as well.
  2. Install an Antivirus program such as Norton, McAfee, AVG, AntiVir, or Avast.
  3. Update your antivirus software daily, and run a complete system scan weekly.
  4. Enable the built-in firewall (Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7) or install a third party firewall program such as Zonealarm.  Use a Router if connected to the internet via Cable Modem or DSL.
  5. Run Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter at least once a month.
  6. Run Windows Update a minimum of once a month.
  7. Delete all unnecessary temporary files weekly.
  8. Wipe down the computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer with a damp cloth as needed to keep it clean.  NEVER spray cleaner directly onto the computer or any external components.
  9. Vacuum the dust from all vents and fan areas of the computer monthly.
