Doc’s Top Ten Recommendations For all Computers running Windows:
- Purchase
a good surge protector or UPS system and plug your computer’s power cords
into the surge protector. If
you have a modem, get one that will protect the modem as well.
- Install
an Antivirus program such as Norton, McAfee, AVG, AntiVir, or Avast.
- Update
your antivirus software daily, and run a complete system scan weekly.
- Enable
the built-in firewall (Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7) or install a third party firewall
program such as Zonealarm. Use
a Router if connected to the internet via Cable Modem or DSL.
- Run
Scandisk and Disk Defragmenter at least once a month.
- Run
Windows Update a minimum of once a month.
- Delete
all unnecessary temporary files weekly.
- Wipe
down the computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer with a damp cloth
as needed to keep it clean. NEVER
spray cleaner directly onto the computer or any external components.
- Vacuum
the dust from all vents and fan areas of the computer monthly.
